How challenging is it to climb professional ladder remotely?

News: Fair warning: this latest set of remote work data may be a little painful for all the diligent remote workers (we count ourselves among them).

According to Bloomberg, in-person employees spend around 25% more time on overall career development activities than remote employees do on mentorship, formal training, professional development, and learning.

Why it matters: In a competitive job market where workers have many alternatives, remote employment has generally survived worker requests for greater flexibility. However, information about how it can hinder their job advancement may offer businesses attempting to entice them back more clout.

  • Over 85,000 employees will be required to work three or four days a week at the office by RBC, one of Canada's major employers, starting in the following month.

  • Banks are undoubtedly leading the way in this regard, as CEOs from JPMorgan and Morgan Stanley have also stated that youthful employees must work on-site with their more seasoned counterparts.

To sum up: The information actually favors a hybrid system that provides staff members a couple days a week to coach and be mentored. Over a third of employees who have the option to work entirely on-site and 20% of those who may do so currently do so.

Definition of "essential worker”?

News: Talks would decide who, besides law enforcement, emergency medical services, and firemen, could no longer go on strike.

In order to identify who won't be allowed to strike, the City of Winnipeg and its main union say they are open to reaching an agreement to expand the definition of an important city worker.

In a report to EPC, Winnipeg's deputy chief administrative officer Moira Geer encouraged council to consider whether essential status could be granted to municipal employees in charge of, among other things, water treatment, sewage treatment, flood prevention, information technology, and emergency repairs. In the fall of 2022, when labor discussions between the city and the Canadian Union of Public Employees Local 500 worsened to the point where 5,000 workers were prepared to go on strike, there had been multiple unsuccessful attempts to define critical personnel.
