Another Cash Crunch

We hate to warn you that entertaining activities are beginning to disappear due to limited local budgets around the nation.

Causes behind this: Officials from Toronto debated whether they could afford to pay for the Canada Day celebrations at city hall for a good portion of yesterday, but in the end, they decided to go ahead.

  • It's a low-risk illustration of how towns are being forced by decreasing municipal funding to pinch pennies and make adjustments that may soon affect your day-to-day existence.

How it’s important for the public: Cities all around the country are struggling with financial deficits brought on in part by lost revenue from the outbreak. Cuts to vital services like transit, waste collection, and libraries might soon follow, making you completely forget about any modifications to your community's Canada Day activities.

  • Toronto, with a deficit of about $1 billion, is the city with the greatest one, followed by Vancouver, with $500 million, Montreal, with $80 million, Winnipeg, with $70 million, and Ottawa, with $12 million.

  • The city of Calgary is thriving thanks to a $65 million budget surplus, which is the only thing to cheer about.

How it’ll impact things: Major Canadian communities will have to utilize a mix of budget cuts, tax increases, and increased fees to balance their books if the federal government doesn't contribute more.

Manitoba needs to properly regulate chiropractors?

The 2009-enacted Regulated Health Professions Act still does not cover chiropractors.

News: The complaints and disciplinary procedure for an association that attempted to reprimand someone for posting a pro-vaccine news piece on her social media, according to a pioneer in the field of professional regulation, may be improved by an effort to better regulate chiropractors.

All chiropractors in the province are represented by and subject to regulation by the Manitoba Chiropractors Association.

The wisest course of action, according to Harry Cayton, a global expert on professional regulation and governance, is for the profession to divide the two jobs like nurses, paramedics, and physicians have done.

“They are obviously at odds. If your goal is to advance your field, You're there to advertise your profession in order to draw in new clients, Cayton added.”

"If you're the regulator, your job is to safeguard the public, not your line of work."
