Canadian workers' on massive strike

News: Canada's government employees are walking the picket line in what will be the most publicized strike since Shohei Ohtani's final throw at the World Baseball Classic.

After last night's failure to reach a new collective bargaining agreement between the federal government and the union that represents them, the Public Service Alliance of Canada (PSAC), over 150,000 federal public employees have gone on strike.

What’s reason behind it: Government employees seek significant wage increases to make up for the damage inflation has done to their purchasing power. The federal government apparently refused to grant more than a 9% pay rise over that period, despite PSAC's request for a 13.5% compensation increase over three years.

Why it matters: 23 Federal Ministries and agencies would be affected, which will make it more challenging for regular residents to perform things like apply for passports, file income taxes, traverse borders, or attend citizenship ceremonies. Basically, anything involving the federal government will be subject to significant delays.

Future Impact: The prolonged inflation we've experienced is fueling labor unrest worldwide as unions seek for significant wage increases to counteract price rises, and Canada is no different.

Manitobans need 150 more family doctors

News: The third-lowest per capita number of doctors in Canada is in this province: Manitoba Doctors. In order to alleviate the serious physician shortage in Manitoba, Shared Health is searching for outside assistance. In order to bring in an extra 150 family physicians to Manitoba—50 each for Winnipeg, the northern health area, and Churchill, as well as the remainder of rural Manitoba—the body that coordinates health care in the province is looking for up to three outside businesses.

However, Shared Health issued the RFP as part of its responsibility to the "provincial supply chain and procurement on behalf of the health system," the spokesman stated. Shared Health is not in charge of physician recruiting, which is frequently assisted by several regional health authorities.
