Snowstorm in Manitoba
War on renewable energy subsidies: Canada
Why it matters: Canadian government officials are worried that cleantech firms may leave Canada for the massive subsidies offered in the US, taking employment and development with them.
While some of the IRA's benefits are applicable to products created in Canada, many benefits are more extensive for projects and enterprises with American roots.
According to former MP and member of the NAFTA Advisory Council Rona Ambrose, "If you look at a carbon capture storage project, here in Canada, we have tax incentives that cover around 35% of capital expenses—the identical project south of the border would have costs covered up to 65%," she said.
Future Impacts: The governments of Canada and Europe have long criticized American efforts to reduce carbon emissions and advance clean energy. Now that the tables have reversed, they are attempting to close the gap with the rapidly advancing American policies.
Southern Manitoba will see a storm that may drop up to 25 cm of snow in some places.
News: A winter storm warning was issued by the federal agency for Winnipeg, Portage la Prairie, and other areas to the east and south. For Brandon and the adjacent regions, which are predicted to receive less snow, a storm watch has been issued.
Helpful Tips: People in Manitoba are urged to pack basic emergency kits including drinking water, food, medicine, a first-aid kit, and a flashlight because power outages can happen during blizzards.
