Race for the Mayor’s Seat in Toronto

With 102 candidates, enough to fill two regular TTC buses, Toronto’s mayoral election has drawn a record-breaking number of applicants.

News: In Canadian municipal politics, this year is looking to be a total mess. The events leading up to the Toronto mayoral election were connected to a controversy involving the outgoing mayor, John Tory. When The Toronto Star published claims of an affair with a teenage employee, he announced his resignation shortly after being elected to a third term.

Importance of Mayor Elections: More than ever the biggest city in Canada needs a meaningful competition as it is grappling with a number of significant issues - a housing crisis, an uptick in violent crimes on public transportation, and a significant budget deficit (to name a few).

The entry of so many candidates has angered some voters (is it some joke?), not only because it divides the vote but also it would be nearly difficult to keep up with the programs and pledges of over 100 candidates for mayor.

By the numbers: According to a recent survey, Olivia Chow, a politician and activist for the NDP who is also Jack Layton's wife, is in the lead with 30% of definite voters, followed by a group of five other candidates who scored more than 5%. Despite the fact that 35% of voters are still uncertain, a lot is sure to happen in the next weeks, and history suggests that the majority of Torontonians probably won't bother to cast a ballot on June 26.

Winnipeg once had the tallest structure in Canada

Hard to believe? Union Bank’s building was not only Canada’s tallest building of that time (1900s) but also the second-tallest structure in the British Empire. Although Winnipeg couldn’t manage to keep the title for any longer than two years.

Nostalgia: Early in the 1900s, Winnipeg's Main Street was still primarily made of mud and prairie gumbo and was crosshatched by tiny wagon wheel tracks, remnants of a frontier past as it teetered on the brink of becoming one of the most prosperous towns in North America.

It passed the boundary in the spring of 1903. At that time, the location for what would eventually become western Canada's first skyscraper, the corner of Main and William Avenue, the edge of a former stream bed, was selected.

The Union Bank building's construction was a significant step forward for the emerging metropolis. Even though it was just 11 stories high, it overshadowed the two and three-story structures in front of Main. Construction of the Union Bank Tower indicated that Winnipeg was changing and that "we were a player": Heritage Winnipeg.

It was the second-tallest structure in the British Empire when it was finished in November 1904. According to Heritage Winnipeg, it remained Canada's tallest skyscraper for the following two years.
